3. In 1956 Harper Lee was given a Christmas gift from friends Michael Brown and Joy Williams of a years wages and a note which read; “You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas”. She accepted and in the next year she wrote To Kill a Mockingbird.
